Thorvaldsen's collection of antiques

The collection of antiquities is Thorvaldsen’s personal assemblage of artworks and objects from ancient Egypt, classical Greece, Etruria, and the Roman Empire. This collection was an important source of inspiration for Thorvaldsen and offers us unique insight into his universe of motifs. Throughout his stay in Rome, Thorvaldsen built up this collection continuously. He was a passionate collector and visited several archaeological sites. The art and culture of classical antiquity was an ideal for Thorvaldsen, as it was for artists of the first half of the nineteenth century in general.

Thorvaldsen’ s extensive, wide-ranging collection, which includes everything from Egyptian amulets to Greek vases can be found on the first floor of the museum.
