Explanation

  • Gioco dell’Oca, or in English the goose game, was a popular board game for children in Thorvaldsen’s day. This game board is probably rather older, from the first half of the 18th century. In a spiral consisting of 63 spaces, a minimum of two players had to move forward by throwing dice. The squares in the game board contain various symbols. And in the middle of the spiral players could find – assuming that they were able to read – the rules of the game. For instance, if you landed on the well in square 31, you had to wait patiently until caught up with by another who by doing so helped you to move on. On the other hand, if you passed the skeleton in square 58 without difficulty, you had done no less than conquer death. Then you could start a new round. There is no end to the game. Gioco dell’Oca was at first a very serious game in which the spiral was to be seen as betokening life. In the 16th century it was played by the court and the aristocracy and in the 17th century by the bourgeoisie. It later became a game played by ordinary folk and finally a popular children’s game.
