Explanation

  • The young Bacchus is sitting on a tiger, with his thyrus over his shoulder, accompanied by a satyr and a Bacchus child. Thorvaldsen has drawn the motif after one of the reliefs adorning the northern façade of the Villa Borghese, but now in the Louvre in Paris. Thorvaldsen ignored the considerable damage the relief had suffered when he depicted its cheerful motif.
