Explanation

  • Mnemosyne is the mother of the muses (Jupiter being their father). She is obscured because she symbolises that which no longer exists (or is visible), and which therefore can only exist (invisibly) in memory. Her companion is little Harpocrates, the god of silence, who commands us to remain silent by placing his finger on his mouth.
