Explanation

• Giovanna (1795-1854) was born in Naples as the daughter of Duke Raphael Riario-Sforza. In 1815, also in Naples, she married Count Laval Nugent-Westmeath, who was Irish by birth, but ended as an Austrian field marshal. Thorvaldsen visited Naples in 1818, and it was perhaps on that occasion the bust was commissioned. A marble version belongs to the Maritime Museum in Rijeka, Croatia.
