Explanation

• Prince Frederik (1808-63) was the son of Prince Christian Frederik and his first wife, Charlotte Frederikke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Thorvaldsen modelled the bust of the nineteen-year-old prince while the prince was on a lengthy visit to Rome in 1828 – the very year, incidentally, in which he married.
