Frederik (VII), A199

Explanation

  • Prince Frederik (1808-63), who is here seen at the age of twelve, was the son of Prince Christian Frederik and his first wife, Charlotte Frederikke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Under the name of Frederik 7, he was in 1848 to become the first Danish king to come to the throne after the end of absolutism. The bust was modelled in Copenhagen during a visit Thorvaldsen made from Rome to his native country in 1820.
