As a general rule, this survey only includes works that can be traced back to Thorvaldsen’s own time and workshops and works that are on view in public places.
A small number of works has nevertheless been included that were put on display in more recent times either because they are works of a particularly striking nature or because a new cast of a work replaces a work that has been lost.
Works by Thorvaldsen in the possession of Danish museums are listed in: Kunstindex Danmark on www.kid.dk.
Some of Thorvaldsen’s works – for instance the reliefs Night and Day – have been copied numerous times. Plaster casts of Thorvaldsen’s works have been made since the middle of the 19th century. These copies are still to be found in many stairways and gateways, not least in Copenhagen.
