“If a marriage entered into in Thorvaldsens Museum lasts as long as the museum itself, it is worth thinking about making your promises to each other here. Thorvaldsens Museum – the first purpose-built museum in Denmark – opened in September 1848. Thorvaldsen himself never married – he probably thought he was too busy creating his art and running all those busy workshops in Rome.
But on Saturdays in May, it will be possible to celebrate weddings that normally take place in Copenhagen City Hall in the entrance hall to the museum. All opinion polls in recent years suggest that a visit to a museum is very much a social event encompassing meetings with friends, common experiences when viewing the works of art, the possibility of exchanging ideas in inspiring surroundings and, in some cases, a meeting with a girl friend or boy friend.
Carl Jacobsen, the brewer of Carlsberg Beer, visited Thorvaldsens Museum altogether 12 times in 1860, and it must be wondered whether trysts were not an essential reason for these visits? Over the years, many people have wanted to g et married in the incredibly beautiful and inspiring surroundings of Thorvaldsens Museum, and the registrar has on several occasions been obliged to practise his art in the museum. Now there is a chance for more people to have this unique opportunity.”
All couples are more than welcome to be photographed in the museum or in the courtyard, but this must be done WITHOUT TRIPOD OR LIGHT EQUIPMENT.
It is unfortunately not possible to enjoy champagne or any other form of alcohol in the museum. So you will have to do this outside in the square.
