Alexander and Diogenes. Bacchus and Satyr, C29r

Explanation

  • Both sides of the paper show a series of motifs apparently without much relation to each other. But they all caught Thorvaldsen’s attention over many years, while several of the motifs directly found their way into his reliefs. He continued, indefatigably, to vary the motifs of the positions of his favourite figures – and used various sources, partly Winckelmann’s and Zoëga’s publications and partly his own collection.
