Prince Józef Poniatowski (1763-1813), a nephew of the last Polish king, joined Napoleon in 1806. At Napoleon’s retreat following the battle at Leipzig in 1813, Poniatowski was wounded and died. His heroic effort for Poland’s freedom was e.g. marked by Thorvaldsen’s equestrian statue, which found its place in the centre of Warsaw.
