Explanation

  • Cupid comes with the rose to the couple who rule the gods and all the world, Jupiter and his wife Juno, who are recognised in the shapes of the eagle and peahen respectively, The rose is the symbol of Cupid’s mother, Venus, the goddess of love – beautiful and fragrant like her, and able to inflict pain by virtue of her thorns, just as love can sometimes do.
